104! The USA Women’s Beach Volleyball team has won 104 straight games in a row.  104 straight games! This is a feat that is unheard of in team sports.  It is a shame that they are not getting the attention that some of the other great teams have gotten.  The names of Misty may-Treanor and Kerri Walsh should be household names by now. However, since the Olympics only happen once every four years and Beach Volleyball isn’t a “high profile sport” this feat has been downplayed.  Let’s compare the USA Beach Team Volleyball’s dominance over their sport to other great teams of our generation. First, the New England Patriots who after winning 18 straight games and were crowned football gods and had the entire world bowing to there greatness. This is just after 18 games. The tadem of Treanor-Walsh has won 104.  Next let’s look at basketball and the 1995-1997 Chicago Bulls who went an impressive 141-23, winning two titles in that period and they have been proclaimed as the best basketball team ever. Even though this is closer and it is over a shorter time period the beach volleyball team havs won 104 in a row. The '08  Patriots and the Bulls of the mid '90's are the considered to be two of the greatest teams of all time.  However, I think that the USA women’s beach volleyball team of the '00's should top that list.  Not only have they won 104 straight games, they are competing against the worlds greatest athletes and dominating.  Their streak would have been 195 straight matches if they had lost in June.  Since the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece they are 195-1.  With such an impressive streak the USA Women’s Beach Volleyball team is one of the greatest teams ever!

This years U.S.A. basketball has a tall and daunting task, to bring the U.S.A. Men’s Basketball program back to glory.  On the surface this might not seem that difficult considering the N.B.A. is the worlds premiere basketball league. However, digging a little deeper one realizes the difficulty of the task at hand. First, there are 76 international players in the NBA which is 14% of its players.  The players that make up this 14% are not just role players.  Many of the major stars in the NBA today are international.  This impressive list includes: Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki and the list goes on.  With some of the major NBA stars playing for other countries, the international competition is not the same as that of the Dream Team in 1992.

Another major challenge for the U.S.A. basketball team is moving past the disappointment of the 2004 games.  For the first time in over a decade the USA did not win Gold, to make things worse they didn’t even place.  This disappointment fueled a media firestorm helping to further degenerate an already falling N.B.A reputation.  To make matters worse, in this years games it is the world against the U.S.A.  Every team is out to beat the United States, every team is bringing there best game against them.  This is going to be wearing on the U.S..  However, I believe with the combination of the talent and the coaching staff that the United States has, this is the year.  This is the year when the United States imitates the mythical bird the phoenix and rises from the ashes and returns to World dominance.

Well, here we are on the day of the National Championship College basketball game, and I can actually watch the game without a superficial self-interested reason to root for a specific team.  It sucks.  Do I root for Kansas?  Do I root for Memphis?

It doesn't matter in the big picture.  The more important thing is that once again I am out of the office pool for the NCAA tournament.  That is devastating news.  What does one do in times of great touble?  I'm not going to lie; it has been tough.  I am slightly on the insane side of competetive.  Slightly.  I boast when I win and explain away when I lose (which is ever so rare, by the way).  I expect to win the office pool every year with my brilliant insights into the bracket.  The results?  Read the title of my blog and guess.  This year though, I thought that things would be different and my March Madness bracket genious would manifest itself in a sweeping victory where my co-workers would sing my praises and ask for autographed copies of my bracket.  Dreams just have a way of dying though.  My last desperate dreams were dashed with the loss of UCLA and the trouncing of UNC in the Final Four.  Not that my bracket was great before that.  My Midwest region was a complete and utter disaster for example ( I mean really, really bad). But at least I had some hope!  I am a huge fan of the tournament and college basketball and will definitely watch the game, but I have to admit that a part of me is longing for that need to have something personal to cheer for.  I don't care who wins tonight.  I have no personal pull towards either team.  I'm sure that all of those people who bought their Final Four tickets are in for a great game.  I wish I had some NCAA tournament tickets myself!  But in all the celebration of the winners tonight keep in mind that the real importace lies in who wins their office brackets, not who actually wins the game.  That my friends is the real world.  All that matters is whether I win or lose.  Next year.....

While some major and minor upsets have kept this year’s NCAA Tournament less than predictable, there is still a national loss of interest since millions of brackets have been tossed out the window.

“Few of my teams are left for me to root for; and the results from here on out are pretty obvious,” says Nathan Rogers when asked why he might be skipping over ESPN tonight to catch an episode of the Hills on MTV.

“The possibility of making money on tickets if good teams make it far,” is what is keeping Circle City Tickets owner Renny Harrison concerned with this weekend’s games.  Ever since IU’s embarrassing loss and the Boilermakers falling out early in the second round, college basketball tickets haven’t exactly been a hot commodity in Indiana.

But what about the few all-star teams still left in the tourney?  All this face-time on ESPN and CBS is the golden ticket to finding NBA recruiters interested in the smooth center with the dashing smile.  You had better believe each teams’ starters are prepared to shine for the cameras since…. ‘yawn’…. they’re going to win anyway!

So, this weekend while you’re cheering on your ONE team left on that bracket, when the game is lagging watch for those shout-outs, ball-hogs, and all the hundreds of empty seats that should have been filled by Hoosiers fans!

There was a time when basketball was one of the most popular sports in Indiana.  A time when people worshipped the Indiana Pacers and would pay big bucks to experience a game at Market Square Arena and later, Conseco Fieldhouse.  The Indiana Pacers were one of the most dominant teams in the league, made up of leaders with Reggie Miller and Mark Jackson.  There were also many well known veterans with Rik Smits, Antonio and Dale Davis, Chris Mullin, and famous coach, Larry Bird.  That was a team filled with hard workers, knowledgeable veterans, good players, and most of all CLASS.

After the veterans retired and Larry Bird left the coaching position, traditional style basketball left the Pacers.  Interest slowly dwindled, fans lost hope, and the stands became more and more empty.  The brawl in Detroit made headline news around the world and gave the Pacers a negative reputation.  The Pacers off-court actions were blown up in the media as well.  They always seemed to be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.  However, since these past incidents and crucial mishaps, big changes have been made.

The Indiana Pacers made a coaching change, traded most of the troublemakers, and brought in young and talented players.  Most of them are unrecognizable and other than Jermaine O’Neal and Jeff Foster, only average 3.1 years in the NBA.  Nevertheless, they have been fun to watch and grow this past season.
