This years U.S.A. basketball has a tall and daunting task, to bring the U.S.A. Men’s Basketball program back to glory. On the surface this might not seem that difficult considering the N.B.A. is the worlds premiere basketball league. However, digging a little deeper one realizes the difficulty of the task at hand. First, there are 76 international players in the NBA which is 14% of its players. The players that make up this 14% are not just role players. Many of the major stars in the NBA today are international. This impressive list includes: Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki and the list goes on. With some of the major NBA stars playing for other countries, the international competition is not the same as that of the Dream Team in 1992.
Another major challenge for the U.S.A. basketball team is moving past the disappointment of the 2004 games. For the first time in over a decade the USA did not win Gold, to make things worse they didn’t even place. This disappointment fueled a media firestorm helping to further degenerate an already falling N.B.A reputation. To make matters worse, in this years games it is the world against the U.S.A. Every team is out to beat the United States, every team is bringing there best game against them. This is going to be wearing on the U.S.. However, I believe with the combination of the talent and the coaching staff that the United States has, this is the year. This is the year when the United States imitates the mythical bird the phoenix and rises from the ashes and returns to World dominance.
